Pre-Construction

  • 1
    Pre-Construction
  • 2
    Break and remove existing hardscape
  • 3
Remove and grade sub soils to appropriate depth

Final Grade and Compacting the Base

  • 1
Use string lines to set final grade. This shows our final elevation (top of pavers) and helps ensure proper slope for water flow and drainage.
  • 2
Spread several inches of class 2 base evenly in all paving areas. This is an aggregate made of crushed rock and recycled concrete which is used as a paving sub-base for freeways and roads as well as driveways and patios. Its ability to compact and firm up makes it ideal for this type of application.
  • 3
Compact base to proper density using a plate compactor. This will ensure a solid foundation to build upon.

Laying the Pavers

  • 1
Spread evenly 1 inch of jagged edge bedding sand in all paving areas.
  • 2
By screeding the sand between 1 inch diameter pipes, a perfectly smooth and even bed is prepared for the pavers to be laid upon.
  • 3
Lay pavers in selected pattern. This process typically starts up against the house (with some exceptions) and continues to the perimeter of the paving area. Patterns can be laid perpendicular to the house or at a 45 degree angle for a different effect.

Filling Joints

  • 1
Mark edge pavers for cutting to allow installation of border stone. The border stone hides cut stones to give a finished look to the entire outer perimeter of your paver installation.
  • 2
For edge stones that do not border other hardscape (existing concrete slab, wall, etc.), the paver is wet-set onto a concrete bond beam. This provides support along the entire edge, keeping the pavers within these borders from loosening or shifting over time.
  • 3
Once all pavers are laid and borders are cut and cemented in, sand is swept over the entire field, filling in all the joints between the stones. This process is repeated until the joints cannot accept any more sand.

Compacting

  • 1
The sanded pavers are then compacted with a vibrating plate to seat the stones into the sand bed below them. This also works the joint sand from the previous step farther down into the joints and ensures the interlocking process.
  • 2
Once the pavers are sanded and compacted, the fully interlocked pavers are swept and rinsed completely clean of excess sand and debris. Finished sand level in a paver joint should be approximately 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch below the bevel of the paver.
  • 3
The finished product is durable and the paving stone installation is beautiful, with added value and curb appeal that is truly clear and long-lasting.
